Crossbow Competition

A question of hawk's eyes and marksmanship

The crossbow competition during the Frundsberg Festival is held between members of the Winzerer Fähnd’l Munich and the Fähnlein Rechberg Mindelheim. The target is a wood-made eagle about 1, 8 meters in diameter with a total weight of 25 kg. Fixed on top of a so called “Vogelbaum” at the height of 30 meters, the arbalests are forced to shoot nearly vertically into the air in order to bring down as weighty pieces as possible in a pre-set order. Only after the imperial insignia – crown, sword and royal orb – are struck, the eagle itself, that is to say, its feathers, are to be aimed at. Ideally, after three hours, there is no wood left to be shot down. Winner is the one who has gained the heaviest parts of the eagle. Participants: Winzerer Fähnd’l Munich; Fähnlein Rechberg.
