500 years ago - Mercenaries, camp life and more

Staged in the picturesque atmosphere of the Mindelburg, this event organised by the Frundsberg Fähnlein shows how the live in a mediaeval residence could have been. Vagrant folk provides for entertainment: Musicians play on mediaeval instruments. Jugglers, acrobats and fire-eaters pull off daring feats. The seriousness of the Landsknecht’s life is demonstrated by the process of mustering potential candidates to become soldiers. Quarrelling mercenaries pit their strength against each other in dangerous sword fights. For further information please visit the following website:

“Helfensteiner Tag”

Every year on Ascension Day, the Fähnlein Helfenstein invites the public to join the traditional “Helfensteiner Tag” in the so-called Eichet area. After the service at 10:00 a.m., flag wavers along pipers and drummers and historic dancers demonstrate their skills. But this is only the calm before the storm. A skirmish with heavy artillery breaks out in the camp of Ludwig Graf Helfenstein leading to hand-to-hand fighting of the mercenaries. The visitors, however, are in no danger whatsoever. They might continue observing the scenery from a distance while enjoying typical delicacies of the Helfenstein Fähnlein like the “Rahmfleck” (a bun with sour cream, bacon and fresh herbs). For further information please visit the following website:

It’s all in the name: The originally Latin word “spectaculum” means literally to unfold a genuine spectacle. No other description could catch the atmosphere of this evening more truly, when the Fähnlein Helfenstein carries its guests away directly into the Middle Ages: The drums are playing and jugglers and fire-breathers excite the audience with their daring feats until late into the night.
